My in-laws are involved in every decision we make

Respecting parents does not mean every private decision in a marriage needs outside approval.

In short

The first step is for the couple to stop making the issue 'your family versus me'. Agree together which decisions are private, which need family input and how each person will speak to their own relatives. Boundaries work better when the spouse whose family is involved takes responsibility for setting them respectfully.

What Islam gives us here

Qur'an 4:19 commands good treatment between spouses.

Islam also gives parents great rights, so good boundaries should be firm without turning into needless disrespect or family cutting-off.

Find the exact point where help became control

Advice about a house purchase is different from deciding how you spend every weekend. Babysitting is different from overruling how you raise your children. Be specific about what is happening.

Do not make your spouse fight your family alone

If the problem is coming from your parents or siblings, you should usually be the one to speak first. Leaving your spouse to defend every boundary can make them feel unprotected.

Not every family opinion needs a response

Some relatives will disagree with your choices. A boundary does not always need a long argument. Sometimes it is simply making the decision as a couple and staying polite.

What you can do now

  1. List the decisions where family involvement is causing tension.
  2. Agree as a couple which matters are private.
  3. Let each spouse lead the conversation with their own family where possible.
  4. Keep the tone respectful but stop reopening every settled decision.

Questions people usually ask next

Does setting boundaries mean disrespecting parents?

No. Boundaries and disrespect are not the same thing. You can remain kind while protecting the marriage from unnecessary interference.

What if my spouse always sides with their parents?

That is a marriage issue in its own right. The couple needs to talk about loyalty, fairness and how decisions are made when family opinions differ.
