Nikah is the Islamic marriage contract formed through the required parties, consent and a clear offer and acceptance. It creates a serious marital covenant rather than simply marking a celebration.

A contract and a covenant

A Nikah joins two people in an Islamic marriage with rights and responsibilities. The ceremony may be simple, but the commitment is significant.

The presence of an imam is useful for organising and documenting the ceremony, but the imam is not the element that makes the marriage exist. The required Islamic conditions are what matter.
