My husband wants us to live with his parents but I want our own space

Living with family can work well, but it can also become a daily source of stress if privacy, money and boundaries were never discussed properly.

In short

Do not treat this as a small housing detail. It affects privacy, intimacy, chores, money, visiting, childcare and the couple's ability to make decisions together. Talk about the actual setup before Nikah, not just 'we will see how it goes'.

What Islam gives us here

Qur'an 4:19 commands spouses to live together with kindness.

A husband is responsible for suitable accommodation according to his means, while the exact ruling in a disputed case may need qualified scholar review.

Ask what 'living with parents' actually means

A separate floor with its own kitchen is very different from sharing one bathroom, one living room and every meal. Do not argue about the label. Talk about the real setup.

Parents can be loved without running the marriage

Supporting parents is important. So is protecting the marriage from constant interference. The couple needs space to make ordinary decisions without every disagreement becoming a family meeting.

Money may be the real reason

Sometimes the couple simply cannot afford to live separately yet. If that is the case, say it honestly and agree what the temporary plan is, rather than pretending there is no tension.

What you can do now

  1. Describe the exact living arrangement, not just the address.
  2. Agree privacy rules before moving in.
  3. Discuss chores, money, guests and family involvement.
  4. If the plan is temporary, agree what would need to happen before moving out.

Questions people usually ask next

Is living with in-laws always a bad idea?

No. It can work very well for some families. Problems usually grow when expectations and boundaries are unclear.

What if we cannot afford our own place yet?

Then talk honestly about a temporary setup and how privacy will be protected. Financial reality should be faced, not hidden.
