Everyone says choose religion and character. What does that actually look like?
A person saying the right Islamic words is not the same as living with good religion and character.
In short
Look for consistency, not performance. Do they pray, speak truthfully, keep promises, respect parents without being controlled by them, treat weaker people well, manage anger and take responsibility when wrong? Religion and character become visible in ordinary behaviour, especially when the person is disappointed or has nothing to gain.

Islamic guidance on spouse selection gives strong weight to religion and character.
Qur'an 49:13 makes taqwa, not status or lineage, the measure of honour before Allah.
Someone can quote reminders, post lectures and speak confidently about roles. Ask whether their daily behaviour matches the image.
Character shows when things go wrong
Watch how they respond to a cancelled plan, criticism, a waiter making a mistake or a parent disagreeing.
Ask people who know them in different settings
Friends, work colleagues, family and community members may each see a different side. Verification is not spying when done sensibly in a marriage process.

Verify important claims with trusted people.
Pay attention to accountability when they make mistakes.

Harshness and contempt are serious character concerns and should not be excused simply because someone appears knowledgeable.
