My future husband wants me to stop working after marriage

This is not a small detail to leave until after the wedding. It can affect money, identity, childcare, housing and resentment very quickly.

In short

Do not go into marriage hoping the other person will change their mind later. Talk clearly about work before Nikah. Ask what he expects, why he feels that way, what the financial plan would be, and whether your own goals can fit inside the marriage. If you both want very different lives, it is better to face that now than turn it into a fight later.

What Islam gives us here

Qur'an 4:19 commands husbands to live with their wives in kindness.

Marriage decisions should be made with honesty about important expectations rather than hiding a major disagreement until after Nikah.

Ask what he actually means

Does he mean he would prefer you not to work once you have children? Does he object to a particular workplace? Does he want a traditional household? Or does he simply expect you to give up work because that is what he saw growing up?

The answer matters. A vague argument about 'roles' can hide several different practical issues.

Talk about the money honestly

If you stop working, what will the household budget look like? What happens to your savings? What level of personal spending will be realistic? What if his income drops?

These are not signs of mistrust. They are normal questions about the life you are agreeing to.

Do not agree just to get through the engagement

Saying yes now and planning to fight about it later is not fair to either person. The same is true if he says yes now but makes it clear he expects to change your mind after the wedding.

What you can do now

  1. Ask what his ideal family setup looks like in five years.
  2. Explain what work means to you, not just what salary it brings.
  3. Discuss children, childcare, household duties and finances together.
  4. If you still want opposite lives, treat that as a real compatibility issue.

Questions people usually ask next

Is this automatically a red flag?

Not by itself. Couples can have different preferences. The concern is pressure, dishonesty or expecting one person to surrender a major life decision without a proper discussion.

What if I am happy to stop working later but not now?

Say that clearly. A staged plan can work if both people genuinely agree to it rather than assuming it.
